Scrolling Saturday.....can you believe it ....already time for another

From the great such simple pleasures I bring you scrolling saturday .....this is a golden oldie from way back in March 2007.

The Husband is finally home!

Does this look like the child of who is sleeping soundly ??? Yeah, didn't think so. Will fell asleep on the floor yesterday afternoon during his quiet time. So at 8:00 when I was leaving to go get Mike, I decided on a whim to take Will. I told him I was "running a night time" errand. He seemed okay with that. When we got to the airport, I was taking pics of him. He loves to take pictures now, so he asked to take a picture of a soldier...there were plenty arriving at the same

time. I told him he could only take a picture of a soldier he knew.....one would come down the little area and he would say, " I don't know that soldier.." Finally he saw Mike, I said, "Do you know that soldier??" He didn't recognize him at first, but jumped in his arms as soon as he did. He didn't quit smiling the entire time! I was surprised he even got to sleep last night! This morning Livi was hollering from her crib, "I'm awake!" Mike went in and said, "Can your daddy get you up?" She jumped into his arms and didn't let go for about 15 minutes. She even left her bunny in her crib...something that NEVER happens!

My kids never seem to have clothes on....ever! This pic was taken when we lived in Leavenworth, see that lovely-Army-housing issue linoleum?? I hurt my back when Livi was little enough to still fit in the sink, so wallaaahh no more bending over some dinky little tub!

5. The last thing I ate was garlic chicken pizza and a nice frosty beverage for dinner. (I am normally a wine drinker, but I did learn to love me some Molson Canadian on our drive through Canada ...... )

6. January… has been a lesson in becoming a family again.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to vegging with the family, tomorrow my plans include rearranging the Princess's bedroom and Sunday, I want to make a white chicken chili!

Meet the furbabies.....

Just a little follow up to Chance, the cat we lost on the drive to Alaska from Oklahoma. Since I now have a scanner, I can actually go back and scan those oh-so-wonderful-circa-1997 scrapbook pages.

We lost Chance on the final leg of our journey from Oklahoma to Alaska. In the morning we would let the car warm up. It was -30 to -40 degrees by this time. We would pack the car, let it warm up, then we would go have breakfast. Even though we had it on 'kid lock', Chance stood on the controls on the driver's side. He rolled the window down and jumped out. We looked for a long time, but had to get on the road because Husband had to sign in at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks. There were ravens the size of small chickens flying around everywhere. We saw Artic Fox darting through the woods. So we really thought we would never see him again.

Six days later, on Thanksgiving night, the owners of the hotel called. They had found Chance. We drove six and a half hours back to Beaver Creek to get him. We had lunch (I remember it was a cream based soup in a bread bowl....this was the first time I had ever seen soup served in a bread bowl!) Then we drove the six and a half hours back to Fort Wainwright. His nose and ears were a tad frost bitten. But he was alive and very skinny. He survived a week in the wilderness of the Yukon Territory. He would not leave Husband's side for a very long time after that.

He was always more like a dog than a cat anyway. He would come to the garage door when he heard the garage door go up. He loved a good piece of fresh spinach! If he heard you opening a bag of salad, he would come running from wherever he was in the house. He would stand at your feet more howling than meowing. If you didn't throw down a piece quick enough, he would start to paw your leg.

We kept for six years after this. Two moves after Alaska, we were going to the East bay of San Francisco. We could only take one pet, so we found a home for him. (We took Josie.) He now lives with a young Lieutenant. It was her first time to be away from home. She needed a pet that was a little older. It worked out the best for both worlds!

Josie is a French Bulldog. Some confuse her for a pig....a little neighbor boy in OK put it best: "She snorts like a pig, she looks like a pig," She must be a pig......but no, she is our little Frenchie. We got her when we were dating. She is our first little baby girl!

One of the few negative things about a French Bulldog, or any snub nosed dog for that matter....is the gas. She can pass some gas or fluff or toots, or whatever you want to call it. But it will make your toes curl. I swear when she is lounging here in the living room while I am kicked back with the laptop, she looks ever so cute snoring over in the corner. Then some smell like no other wafts over in your direction. Dang, makes a girl keep a can of Febreeze air effects near by!!

After seeing an "I never" at fond of snape, I thought it would be a great way to do this week's Thursday 13.

and since I can change the rules, the rest will be "I have"....

6. I have a running to Do list.

7. I have Done (completed) a Becoming an Outdoor Woman in the winter in Alaska. (The only reason I went when my friends asked was because it was at Chena Hot Springs and we could bring wine!)

8. I had a Dictionary that I highlighted the word every time I had to look one up. I put the date in the column.


9. I have Danced the night away under the stars and fireworks.


10. I have to drink a Diet Dr Pepper daily!!!


11. I have loved seeing the kids interact with their Dad since he came home.

12. I have a Dog, a French Bulldog.

13. I have a teaching Degree in Special Education.

Organizing tips from Tommie #2...the pantry

Ask and you shall receive. Many of you asked to see the pantry. I have had every kind of pantry imaginable: little tiny cabinets under the counter, an entire room in the laundry area (loved that one), and even a room away from the kitchen (in KS at a house built the early 1900's). I really like the one I have here.

This one has two smaller areas on the top and shelves on the bottom. Just like you would see in the grocery store, things are grouped in sections. They are also labeled on the front of the shelf. The things at the top are things that used to be in random shaped bags. To be able to maximize the space, I take them out of the bags and put them in the same shaped containers. There are small round ones, square and rectangle ones. They hold things like brown sugar, rices, nuts, and kids snacks (graham crackers, goldfish, rice cakes, animal crackers).

Here is the rest of the pantry. Each shelf has a label on the front.

• Shelf one is oils, vinegars, sauces, and teas.
• Shelf two is rices, pastas, mixes, kids' mac and cheese.
• Shelf three is baking stuff: chocolates, baking powder, baking soda, and cooking frosting stuff.
• Shelf four is canned goods.
• Shelf five is cereals and crackers.

But the best thing about this pantry is the shelves on the bottom SLIDE OUT!!! I love this!

I do have an 'overflow' pantry. I only go to the commissary once every two weeks. I fill in fresh fruit, veggies, and dairy from the grocery store right by my house. So in here are bulk things that will eventually get moved to the pantry in the kitchen. Don't laugh at my toilet paper and paper towels. Nothing says "I love you!" like never running out of toilet paper.

One thing you can't see on this overflow pantry is there is a list on the door. Long ago I made a grocery list by sections just like on the self labels. I have it in a Word document. Every time I take something out of the overflow pantry to restock the regular one, I highlight it on the list. I only purchase the things that are highlighted on the list.

Organizing tips from Tommie #1

Stella had mentioned on Scrolling saturday.... I should start an organizing tips entry.

So today when I was getting out my phone charger, it reminded me of that. Here is a prime example of one of the little things I do to make my life easier. We have a drawer full of different cords....phone cords, camera cords, chargers, etc. I know I can look in there and with one glance find mine. Because it is labeled "phone charger"....the other half of the sticky label wraps around the cord and says "charger". Which brings me to any organizers best friend:

My label maker.....I know I have blogged about my organizers best friend before. For as long as I have remembered, I have had a label maker. Before I realized there was a machine that did this, I used to print out text on a typewriter and put Scotch tape over it to 'laminate' it. I have had mucho expensive ones, but this one has been my favorite. It comes in refill tapes of plastic, paper, clear, ones that can be used indoor, ones that can be used outdoors. Best of all, both Target and Walmart carry the refills. I usually paper tape on things that are files and such and plastic on more permanent things. The clear tape is good for things that you are color coordinating. You can print it on clear and paste the tape to a colored piece of paper.

I have always been organized. At times, some would even go so far as to say way over the top. I think I control my environment to the X degree because I don't always know what our little world is going to bring me. Okay enough mumbo jumbo hocus pocus.

If you want me to bring my organizing insight to a certain area, let me know. I don't have it all organized (okay, maybe I do) but I have great ideas1

This drive thru beer shack cracked me up. I had my new little baby camera with me, so I HAD to take a picture of it. When I was uploading it, Husband had to add his two cents: "Since it is right next to a car wash, you can get your beverage, then get your car washed. Or better, enjoy your beverage during the car wash. Yeah right!"

My new rabbit...... Tiff asked what this was.....that rabbit is a wine opener. You can open the bottle with just the push of a lever! So if you need to get your wine on quickly, this is what you need!

Scrolling saturday....

I found this new thingy (don't you love my description) at such simple pleasures who I think found my blog through Mama Geek .

All you do is, take an archived post, one that was shown no love...back when you were just writing for yourselves and had the random family member reading. And...repost it. It will get the love and appreciation that it was so entitled to!!!

Like I mentioned yesterday, I have blogged for one year now! I started this in 2005, but didn't post to it until Husband left for his deployment.

So here is one of my first posts from January 2007:

Just a few thoughts for today: A while back I received a book by Sarah Ban Breathnach: Simple Abundance

Basically she says......"The six threads of abundant living, which when woven together produce a tapestry of contentment that wrap us in inner peace, well being, happiness & a sense of security. The first of these is gratitude. When we do a mental & spiritual inventory of all that we have, we realise that we are very rich indeed. Gratitude gives way to simplicity- the desire to pare down, clear out & realise the essentials of what we need to live truly well. Simplicity brings with it order, both internally & externally. A sense of order in our life brings us harmony. Harmony provides us withwith the inner peace we need to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us every day, & beauty opens us up to joy. "

Even though I usually stick to the lite little fluffy stuff on this blog, this really reached out and touched me today. I don't know if it is because I am feeling super emotional or what. But I have so much to be grateful for....first and foremost, my family, husband, and the many friends I have made no matter where the Army has sent us. I love being as organized as I am...with it brings a simplicity in running my life day to day. Just today I had the opportunity to organize a craft closet at Bubba's. (Remember I have to do 20 volunteer service hours there!!)

Anyway, this closet looked like Hobby Lobby exploded in it. With about $100 and a couple dozen Rubbermaid tubs, I could have that place looking spiffy...But I didn't, I had a few mismatched containers and some stackable containers. I made do, and they all loved when I got done.

At home, that simplicity has helped me only surround myself with the things I absolutely love. You can't organize clutter. Trust me, at this point in my life I need the simplest of lives! I need that harmony to be able to get through the days when I about to lose it. I know so many other military wives have done this many times before, but this is our first deployment. I want to have that joy in my life and not allow the daily stress impact that. I do want to live a simple, peaceful, and abundant life. Okay, back to the fluff for later....t.-

1. My favorite memory of 2007 was when the bus pulled away and Husband was in that formation waiting to finally be home after fourteen months!

2. I’m most tempted by a good glass of wine.

3. Today I want to try the de-lite veggie pizza from Papa Johns.

4. The last thing I took a picture of was the Princess after she went to the eye doctor....she had to have her eyes dilated. So she got to have her favorite reward: a Starbucks blueberry muffin (though they only had coffee cake).

5. You and I have memories that are good and plenty. ***Which reminds me I had my one year blog-aversary on the 9th!!!***

6. The most recent movie I’ve seen that I really enjoyed was some kid movie I am sure!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to the pizza with the family, tomorrow my plans include play around with my camera (I just got a Scott Kelby book) and Sunday, I want to make Husband coconut shrimp with a pineapple salsa for dinner!

Thursday 13......#23....the letter C

For this week. I bring you the letter C ......and can say letter C without singing the Cookie Monster song.......??

I thought I would take you back about ten years ago.....husband and I were moving to Fairbanks, Alaska.

1. Canada - We drove the alCAN -the Alaska-Canadian highway that connects the US to Alaska. I think it took us about 10 days. We could not have done it without The Milepost. It seriously tells you what is happening at each mile!

2. Chance - We took our cat, Chance, and our French Bulldog, Josie with us on this trip. **We lost Chance at the very last stop we made in Canada only to be reuinited him a week later.***

3. Champagne -We took a bottle of Dom Perignon from our wedding with us. We hadn't been married quite one year when we left Oklahoma, so we saved it for our one year anniversary.

4. Cabin- We stayed at Northern Rockies Lodge in Muncho Lake, British Colombia.....since it was winter and the off-season, NO ONE was there.

5. chef- The owners weren't even there, but the Chef was. He told us what he had in his kitchen...we picked salmon. He made an amazing dinner!

6. Cook - we picked salmon. He COOKED an amazing dinner. **** Janet commented that I already said this....she is having some deja vu......I was going edit it, but I think I will it just for grins and giggles.


7. Cigar - After dinner, husband sat on the porch and smoked a cigar.....most likely a Macanudo Hampton Court. *husband said, "I helped, I am done!" *






8. Check- Because of the Candadian dollar, our check for dinner was more than the cost for staying there for the night


9. Change- We (totally meaning Husband) didn't have to change a tire the entire time UNTIL we got to the Alaskan border. We even traveled on roads that were rock and not even paved!

10. Cell phone- I didn't realize that even though my cell phone was getting service I was being charged more than $3 a MINUTE .... I called the last place we stayed to see if they ever say Chance...don't you know I was honked when I got that cell phone bill!

11. Close- Okay I am really reaching here! We stopped wherever we could.....who knew at the end of winter most places CLOSED for the season. So we stopped at little hole-in-the-wall bar and grills all the time! Most of the time, they let us bring Josie (the French Bulldog) in with us. Since it was so cold outside, we didn't want to leave her in the car.

12. COLD- whew hoo....reminded me of another C....When we left Oklahoma in early November, it was in the low 60's. By the time we got to Fairbanks, it was -40 degrees. Yes, dear readers, that is NEGATIVE 40 degrees. I don't even know what that is in Celsius, but it was dang cold. It hurt to breathe!! It was a one hundred degree difference in temps between the two!


13. CHIPPED: Which brings me to my final C in this little story.....Did you know fake nails CHIP off when you barely bang them on a car door handle? They do! When it is freakin' cold in the great white North!!

I could go on and on about Alaska.....we loved our time there. We made great lifelong friends while there.....off hand, I can think of several couples (hey, another C, I am on a roll!!) without them, I don't know how we would have done it!

how old is too old???

I think my babies are growing up. Tonight while we were getting ready for baths.....a job that Husband has resumed......meltdowns were happening all over the house. We decided to do a bath in the "big tub" <----the Jacuzzi tub in the master bathroom.

One was flipping out because his backpack wasn't where it was supposed to be. The other was freaking out because she wanted me to do something or the another. So finally just to make things simple, I decided to get in the bath with them. I could wash the Princess's hair quickly and be out of there quickly!

Yeah right, that was the first mistake I made. ....NO ONE gets a quick bath on meltdown nights. I was holding the Princess in my lap and all of a sudden she makes a lunge towards 'the girls'.....WOOAH! Dude, those things dried up long ago! I nursed her to almost 15 months of age....but still....it is long gone! Husband is making comments from the cheap seats outside the bath!

So, I guess the age has come, no more taking baths with them. They are 3 1/4 (do NOT forget the 1/4) and 4 1/2. So has the time come.....the end of just hopping in to get things done??

Yes, I screamed like a crazy woman....this is the same pond I had to dive into while wearing a dress to save the Princess a couple of years ago! ***Edited to add: The POND is just one of those decorative ones in a garden...maybe three feet by five feet. But it was deep as my thigh! The Princess fell off a chair and it tipped her into the pond. She was maybe a year old at the time! ***

9. I really need to go by BED BATH AND BEYOND to get some new toothbrush heads. I should just order them online and be done with it!
